Acrochrodon (Skin Tag)

Description

  • Skin tags are small, soft, benign growths that often appear in areas where the skin folds or rubs together, such as the neck, armpits, eyelids, groin, or under the breasts. They are typically flesh-colored or slightly darker and hang off the skin by a thin stalk. Skin tags are harmless and not cancerous, though they can sometimes become irritated by clothing, jewelry, or shaving.

When should I come in?Ā

You should consider coming in if:

  • The skin tag becomes painful, irritated, or frequently bleeds.

  • You notice rapid changes in color, size, or shape.

  • The tag causes cosmetic concern or discomfort due to its location.

  • You are uncertain if the growth is a skin tag or something else (since some skin cancers can mimic benign lesions).

Treatment is quick and straightforward in the office—removal can be done safely with minimal discomfort.

How are they treated?

  • No treatment is needed if the skin tag is small and not bothersome.

  • In-office removal options include:

    • Snip or shave removal – the skin tag is clipped off with sterile scissors or a scalpel.

    • Cryotherapy – freezing the tag with liquid nitrogen so it falls off.

    • Electrocautery – using gentle heat to burn and seal the base.

  • Removal is quick, safe, and usually done with little to no downtime.

  • At-home cutting or tying off is not recommended, as it can cause bleeding, infection, or scarring.

Treatment is typically done for cosmetic reasons or when a skin tag becomes irritated by clothing, jewelry, or shaving.
