Dermatofibroma

Description

  • A dermatofibroma is a common, benign skin growth that usually appears as a firm, round bump under the skin. They are most often found on the legs, arms, or shoulders. The growth may be tan, brown, pink, or reddish and can sometimes darken over time. A classic sign is that the bump will dimple inward when pinched (“dimple sign”). Dermatofibromas are harmless and not cancerous, though they can sometimes be mistaken for other skin lesions.

When should I come in?

You should schedule a visit if:

  • The bump is growing, changing color, or becoming painful.

  • It is itchy, irritated, or frequently traumatized (e.g., by shaving or clothing).

  • You are unsure if the lesion is a dermatofibroma or want confirmation it is not something more serious (such as a skin cancer).

  • You would like to discuss removal for cosmetic reasons.

At Integrity Skin & DermCare, we evaluate growths carefully to ensure accurate diagnosis and, when needed, provide safe removal with attention to minimizing scarring.

How are they treated?

  • No treatment is required if the growth is not bothersome.

  • Surgical excision may be considered if the dermatofibroma is painful, irritated, enlarging, or cosmetically concerning.

  • Since removal often requires a deeper excision, a small scar will remain after treatment.
