FULL BODY SKIN CANCER EXAM
How often should I have a SKIN CANCER screening?
Melanoma
-
Every 3–6 months for the first 2 years after diagnosis.
-
Every 6–12 months for years 3–5.
-
Annually after 5 years if no recurrence.
-
Monthly self-skin exams are strongly encouraged.
Basal Cell Carcinoma (BCC) & Squamous Cell Carcinoma (SCC)
-
Every 6–12 months after diagnosis, since there’s a higher chance of developing additional skin cancers.
-
More frequent follow-up (every 3–6 months) may be recommended if:
-
You’ve had multiple BCCs/SCCs,
-
A more aggressive type,
-
Or a weakened immune system.
-
-
Monthly self-skin exams are recommended to catch new or changing spots early.
No History of Skin Cancer
- Screenings may be recommended more often than once a year even without a prior skin cancer.

What to expect at the appointment?
A full-body skin exam is the most comprehensive option.
- Your provider will carefully examine your entire skin surface, from head to toe.
- This includes your scalp, face, ears, neck, trunk, arms, legs, hands, feet, and even areas you may not think about—such as under nails and behind the ears.Â
