Keloid
Description
-
A keloid is an overgrowth of scar tissue that develops after a wound, surgery, piercing, burn, or even minor skin injury. Unlike hypertrophic scars, keloids grow beyond the boundaries of the original wound and can continue to enlarge over time. They are often firm, raised, shiny, and pink to dark brown in color. Keloids may cause itching, tenderness, or discomfort, and can be a cosmetic concern.
When to come in?Ā
You should see a dermatology provider if:
-
A scar or bump is growing beyond the wound edges
-
The keloid is painful, itchy, or irritated by clothing/jewelry
-
It is restricting movement in an area such as the chest, shoulders, or earlobes
-
You are unsure if the growth is a keloid, hypertrophic scar, or another skin lesion
How is it treated?Ā
-
Treatment options depend on the size, location, and symptoms of the scar. At INTEGRITY, weĀ treat with:
-
Steroid injections to soften and flatten the scar
-
Silicone gel or sheets to reduce thickness and redness
