Milia

Description

  • Milia are tiny, white or yellowish bumps that commonly appear on the face, especially around the eyes, cheeks, or nose. They form when keratin (a skin protein) becomes trapped beneath the surface of the skin, creating small, firm cysts. Milia are harmless, not contagious, and very common in both children and adults.

When should I come in?

You may want to schedule a visit if:

  • The bumps are persistent and not improving on their own.

  • They cause cosmetic concern or affect confidence.

  • You’re unsure if the bumps are truly milia or could be another skin condition.

  • You have tried over-the-counter remedies without improvement.

Milia don’t usually require medical treatment, but in-office procedures (such as a tiny sterile extraction) can remove them safely and with minimal risk of scarring.

How are they treated?

Milia often go away on their own, but when they persist, treatment is simple. Options include:

  • In-office extraction using a sterile needle or blade to gently release the keratin.

  • Topical retinoids or exfoliating treatments may help prevent new milia from forming.

  • Avoiding at-home “picking” is important to reduce the risk of scarring or infection.
